Is there a ‘right’ cloud infrastructure choice? Probably not. In recent years enterprises have pursued a hybrid cloud strategy: one foot on-premise or in a private cloud environment, the other in a public cloud.
Today there is a drive towards multi-cloud, with enterprises increasingly using more than one public cloud provider – Google GCP, Microsoft Azure and AWS, all boast fast growing revenues and client bases (even if some are more circumspect about actually figures than others) – often the same customers are using one, two, or even all three, with various flavours of SaaS on top.
So what’s the ‘right’ cloud choice, and how do you decide? And are many organisations asking the wrong question? Can you in fact choose all three if you wish? And if you do – as increasing numbers of enterprises are - how do you deal with the increased management complexity?
A best-of-breed cloud approach is not without its complications – not least visibility of cloud consumption patterns and planning, cost optimisation, security, and compliance. However, these hurdles can be overcome. Do so, and the rewards of a multi-cloud strategy can include greater workload suitability, reduced costs, balanced business and IT risk, and increased agility and application mobility.
With multiple vendors now promising “all-in” discounts to customers willingly opting for a single provider, the debate over which road to take is as fascinating as it’s ever been.

He is responsible for the platform used for High Frequency Trading and other high performance systems. Richard has been involved with Cloud since the days of the $1 per CPU hour Grid launched by Sun Microsystems in 2004. He created a flavour of this suitable for Banks. He went onto Microsoft where he was a principle architect with the Live team working on what eventually became Azure. He specialises in high performance platforms and has been working on Hybrid Cloud solutions for the last two years. Richard is a Fellow of STAC Research, a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Chartered IT Practitioner.
